The Arlington High School boys fell just eight points shy of first place Monday during the Nebraska Capitol Conference Track & Field Championships in Valley.
With rainwater lining the edges of the Douglas County West track, the Eagles won six events, claiming runner-up honors behind the host Falcons. The Fort Calhoun Pioneers, meanwhile, finished fifth in the boys' standings.
On the girls' side, the AHS squad took third behind first-place Syracuse and second-place Yutan. The Eagles won two events, while the Pioneers fell short of one for seventh.

Foust, May and Flesner lead Eagles
The senior trio of Kaden Foust, Nolan May and Kevin Flesner led the efforts of coach Kyle Buckingham's Eagles.
All three won individual events and the 1,600-meter relay with Dallin Franzluebbers, but only Foust broke a record. In addition to his 400-meter dash victory in 51.65 seconds, the Arlington standout produced the best long jump in school history — 22 feet, 1 inch.
Flesner, meanwhile, won the 800 run in 2:02.48. He bested Franzluebbers, who also claimed second in the 400, by less than a second.
May, however, topped the whole NCC field in both the mile and 2-mile races. The senior finished the 1,600 run in 4:37.91 and the 3,200 in 10:14.9.
In addition to Franzluebbers' second-place showings, Jacob Beans earned eight Eagle team points with a runner-up finish in the shot put. His best attempt covered 47 feet, 8.5 inches of ground.
The Arlington girls' Hailey O'Daniel added two second-place finishes in the 800 run and long jump, too. She also won the 1,600, though, crossing the finish line in a meet-best 5:37.24.
Freshman Hayley Arp won the discus as well. Her event-winning attempt covered 122-6 of soft ground and damp grass.
AHS was scheduled to host its annual meet Thursday and next competes 9 a.m. May 9 during the Class C-2 District track and field meet at David City Municipal Park.

Unified athletes lead Fort Calhoun
Preston Johnson and the Fort Calhoun Unified track and field athletes earned the Pioneers' only first-place finishes Monday at DC West.
The 400-meter relay team of Anna Taylor, Reilly Rauterkaus, Logan Brewer and Will Maxon led the way with a time of 1:03.94. Daniel Pawol and Samantha Thomas contributed to the Unified squad's showing, too.
Johnson, however, clocked in at 23.16 seconds to win the 200 dash by 0.08.
While there weren't many victories, coach Mandy Taylor's team did add six second-place finishes. Calhoun's Michael Maxon earned a silver medal in the 100 dash, crossing the finish line in 11.22 seconds.
Lawson Tjardes' time in the 1,600 run — 4:41.29 — was good for second, too, while his 3,200 relay team with Seth Waters, Chris Post-Whiteowl and Will Dennis also earned runner-up honors. It finished its 2-mile race in 8:29.54.
Raeann Massey, meanwhile, finished her 3,200 meters in 13:22.52 for an individual silver medal.
FCHS' TJ DeMilt and Bria Bench added a pair of second-place finishes, too, but in field events. DeMilt cleared a bar set at 12 feet, 6 inches in the pole vault, while Bench completed a leap of 4-10 in the high jump.
The Pioneers were set to compete on the Eagles' track on Thursday and next compete 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at home. Coach Taylor's squad hosts the the Class B-2 District meet with Unified events to begin at 9 a.m., too.
