Washington County folks played integral roles during the annual Nebraska Softball Association (NSA) convention in 1978.
Larry Leehy was reappointed as the Men's Slowpitch District Commissioner for the area, while Gary Baker was elected vice president of the NSA. Blair ballplayer Kathy Foley was announced as a recipient of an NSA scholarship as well.
Amy Cohrs of Washington earned the title of Miss Nebraska Softball, too, after her time as a member of Scheffler's Women's Major Slowpitch state championship team.
R.D. Zimmerman, Jr., meanwhile, received the Governor's Award, “which was initiated last year to recognize one community in the state which has excelled in providing a recreation program, in conjunction with an outstanding local softball program, for the their respective community,” the Enterprise newspaper reported.
Through the convention's events, Blair also learned its tournament responsibilities for the year. It was to host the Girls Youth Division State Slowpitch Tournament for ages 13-15 and 16-18, while also putting on the Men's District Class A Slowpitch Tourney.
