Arlington High School hosted its home track and field invitational Thursday afternoon as teams tuned-up for district competition.
The Eagle girls earned third in the team standings, while the boys took fourth. Fort Calhoun, meanwhile, secured fifth and sixth, respectively.
Altogether, the two Washington County schools combined for eight event wins. AHS' Whitney Wollberg won the pole vault, clearing a bar set at 9 feet, 6 inches, while Emilee Thayer-Mencke of FCHS topped teammate Bria Bench for a win in the high jump. The Pioneer jumped over a bar set at 5-2.
Eagles Kaden Foust and Trent Koger, and Calhoun's Lawson Tjardes and Matthew Kelly, meanwhile, won individual events on the boys' side. Foust cleared 21-10 in the long jump, while Koger secured a triple jump victory with a leap of 40-5.75.
Tjardes won the 1,600-meter run in 4:38.6, too, while Kelly crossed the finish line first in the 110 hurdles. The latter Pioneer event winner stopped the clock in 16.13 seconds.
Arlington was dominant across the 1,600 and 3,200 relays, too. Foust, Trey Hill, Nolan May and Dallin Franzluebbers won the mile-long race in 3:28.84, while Kevin Flesner joined Foust, Hill and May to win the 2-mile in 8:10.08.
Beyond event wins, AHS' throwers captured half of all 12 top-6 finishes in the discus and shot put events. Taylor Arp was second in the discus ahead of fourth-place Hayley Arp, fifth-place Britt Nielsen and sixth-place Jaydin Allen.
In the shot put, Hayley and Taylor Arp took second and third, respectively.
Flesner and Kelise Krivohlavek added second-place individual 800 run efforts for coach Kyle Buckingham's Eagles, too, while Austyn Flesner claimed silver medals in both the 100 and 300 hurdles.
Two of coach Mandy Taylor's Pioneers — Kelly (300 hurdles) and Kaylee Taylor (400 dash and triple jump) — added individual second-place showings, too. FCHS next hosts the Class B-2 District Meet at 10:30 a.m. today.
Arlington, meanwhile, tries to earn its own state qualifications 9 a.m. Thursday during the Class C-2 District meet at David City Municipal Park.
