FCHS' Owen Miller signs with Hastings College golf

Fort Calhoun High School senior Owen Miller made the decision to earn a college golf roster spot as a junior.
“Since last year, I wanted to continue,” the Pioneer said Thursday. “I knew I had to work to get better, and this year I've been playing better.”
He wanted a spot and he earned it, recently signing with Hastings College of the Great Plains Athletic Conference.
“I set out to do it and it happened,” Miller said.
The senior said four years of work with FCHS coaches Dustin Humphrey and Mike Mallette helped him reach his goal. A lot of offseason practice didn't hurt the process either.
“It really helps,” he added.
Miller picked the Broncos after two of his siblings also attended Hastings College.
“Hastings golf, they're growing and getting better,” the newest recruit said.
At the college level, Miller hopes to earn his spot with the team all over again.
“When I get there, I want to, obviously, play on the varsity team,” he said. “But, freshman year, if that doesn't happen, I'm not worried about it.”
The Pioneer has experience working his way up.
“I didn't start varsity as a freshman in high school, so, as I grow, I'm hoping I can make it sophomore year and on,” Miller explained.
Blair High School graduate Luke Valasek joined the Hastings College roster last fall, too. He was one of seven Nebraska natives on the Broncos' online roster at the time.
Hastings is coached by Skyler Good, according to the school athletics website.
