AHS runners get up and get to camp

Morning sessions start with meetings, move toward runs

Arlington cross-country Eagles rolled out of bed and ran last week.
Junior high and high school runners participated in a work week-long, July 15 through Friday, camp at AHS. Every morning started at 7:30 a.m. in coach Michaela Curran's classroom where there were no desks, but chairs for all of the participants. Newspaper clippings noting last season's successes adorned one wall, while framed photos of graduated runners with their coach sat nearby.
During the classroom meetings, Curran went over several details regarding cross-country, including the annual discussion about the need for proper footwear. She shared the rules of road running Thursday, too, before going over the morning's route around town.
“Let's go out and let's get it done,” the coach said with enthusiasm.
Thursday's 90 minute session later ended with a water balloon toss — one of the team-building elements of Curran's camp. She also briefly described how the week would end Friday with a game of “Chase,” which she teased was a bit like Hunger Games for runners.
Fall cross-country practices can officially begin Aug. 12, according to the NSAA website.
