Blair High School volleyball setter Hailey Roewert didn't have to be picky Tuesday on her home floor.
The Bears she passed the ball along to made the most of their opportunities to take swings at the Plattsmouth Blue Devils.
“All of them,” she said when asked who stood out. “Everybody.”
Coach Becca Mellema's BHS squad bested the Devils in three sets Tuesday, 25-21, 25-19 and 25-16. The Bears improved to 3-12 with the victory, while the visitors dropped to 4-7.
Roewert believes positive energy helped lead her team to its first 3-0 sweep of the season.
“We just brought each other up a lot,” the junior said.
Blair fell behind early during the first set, but tied it up at 14-all on Nicki Wendt's kill. From there, kills by Taylor Mostek and Peyton Ogle opened up a lead before Mostek's ace serve made the score 21-17.
Down the stretch, Ogle, Wendt and Mostek added more successful attacks for a 1-0 lead.
The Bears' momentum carried into the second set as they built a 10-1 advantage. Ogle and Mostek spikes helped keep the lead before Wendt scored set point on another assist by Roewert.
Then, in the third, BHS cruised to a 15-7 lead with another Wendt kill. Next, freshman Madeline Chikos' kill gave the Bears an eight-point advantage before back-to-back Wendt service aces made it 19-10.
Brooke Roewert's block pushed her team's third-set lead to 10 before Gueryn Kay and Ogle added kills late, leading to Savanah Roan's ace at match point.
“Overall, the culture was better,” coach Mellema said of the win. “Maybe it was something that you could see, maybe it wasn't, but I feel like, compared to Saturday, we didn't let little things get to us. We were able to just brush it off.”
The Bears lost two matches last Saturday to Bennington and Hastings, but beat Plattsmouth soundly Tuesday and were scheduled to play at Columbus on Thursday. They next compete Saturday during the Arlington Eagles' home tourney. Matches begin at 9 a.m.
