The Fort Calhoun Senior Legion baseball team is 16-20 overall after its latest Monday-Tuesday, two-game split.
Zig Drywall first earned a 6-0 win against Elmwood-Murdock Nehawka at home before Tuesday's 14-6, run-rule loss at Omaha Gross. The Pioneers trailed Gross from the start, surrendering four first-inning runs.
During the third inning in Omaha, though, Post 348 made a push to get back into the game. Trailing 5-0, Calhoun scored four runs.
AJ Duros produced a one-out single to left field first, stealing second with Kenny Wellwood — who also reached — in the batter's box. JT Mlnarik then singled to load the bases, setting up Josh Miranda, who delivered a two-RBI single.
Sam Genoways, Post 348's starting pitcher, stepped into the box next, sending the ball into deep right field. The hit found the grass off of the Gross outfielder's glove, producing two more runs.
The one-run deficit, however, was as close as the Zig Drywall squad would get. The home team produced nine runs during the bottom half of the inning, effectively putting the game away even as Calhoun scored twice during the fourth frame.
A day earlier, Monday, Post 348 hosted and defeated the Elmwood-Murdock Nehawka Senior Nationals, 6-0, with a late scoring push. Breaking a scoreless tie, Zig Drywall scored five runs during the bottom of the fifth inning before adding a sixth run in the sixth.
Mlnarik led Calhoun at the plate, finishing with two RBIs and a run scored. Miranda, Colin Bolay and Jordan Back notched runs as well, while Duros added a hit.
Wellwood earned the pitching win, striking out nine Elmwood-Murdock batters across six innings. He allowed just two hits before Bolay stepped onto the mound to throw the seventh frame, finishing with a strikeout.
Fort Calhoun was to start a Springfield tournament Thursday against the hosts. The event continues through Sunday.
