Class C2 No. 2 Yutan and Louisville extended the Fort Calhoun High School volleyball team's losing streak Thursday night.
Coach Liz Sevcik's Pioneers are now 0-for-9 in October after the back-to-back 2-0 losses. The triangular-hosting Chieftains bested FCHS 25-6, 25-11 before the Lions earned a 25-22, 25-20 victory.
The Pioneers led both the first and second sets against 12-11 Louisville before ultimately falling short. They jumped out to a 5-0 advantage during the first set with Emilee Thayer-Mencke tallying two kills to start it. Freshman Tatum Ross added an ace serve before a Jovi Grenier kill capped the strong start.
FCHS' Taylor Stewart added a kill at 6-3 before Sophie Weeks' ace at 9-7. Louisville battled back to a 10-10 tie before Jordan Faucher went on a serving streak that Grenier stretched out to 14-10 on another kill.
Ross added her second ace ahead of Stewart's successful swing at 18-13, too. From there, though, the Lions earned the 1-0 advantage despite an Ari Nelson ace at 22-19.
Back-to-back Thayer-Mencke kills kicked off what would become the Pioneers' 9-4 lead during the second set, too. Louisville again came back, however, playing a tight race to 25 with Coach Sevcik's team.
A Weeks serve gave Calhoun a 11-10 lead before Stewart blasted the ball through a block to pull her team within 20-19. The Lions outscored the Pioneers from there, though, claiming the 2-0 sweep.
FCHS (8-15 overall) starts Nebraska Capitol Conference Tournament play today at Conestoga. It begins at 6 p.m. before Thursday's second round and consolation matches at the same time, but at a different, to-be-determined place.
