A fire destroyed a mobile home unit in Blair on Dec. 26.

Blair Volunteer Fire and Rescue and Fort Calhoun Fire and Rescue responded to reports of a working fire at a mobile home on Longview Drive shortly after 1 p.m. Monday.

Crews encountered an active fire and were able to put it out after about an hour on scene.

Blair Fire Chief Dave Aten said the fire was likely caused by a heating element used to defrost pipes in the hot water unit.

The structure was unoccupied when the fire began and no injuries were reported. The fire did claim the life of a cat that was inside the unit.

Aten said the exact cause of the fire is under State Fire Marshal investigation.
