Bears, Eagles get swept, too

All three Washington County high school volleyball teams lost 3-0 matches Thursday night.
In Fort Calhoun, the Pioneers fell to Syracuse 25-9, 25-21 and 25-13. Coach Liz Sevcik said the Rockets succeeded in tallying digs against FCHS.
“Which was putting them in a great position to attack on offense,” she continued. “They were cutting around the block.”
Despite a 2-0 deficit, the Pioneers still showed effort during the third set.
“We were just kind of slow to start in both sets before we started, kind of, working together and going for the ball,” Sevcik said.
Freshman Emilee Thayer-Mencke finished one long rally with a hard spike off of a Syracuse player's hands. She only secured the kill thanks to a hustle play by senior Raegen Wells, who collided with the scorer's table in an effort to extend the play.
Sophomore Simone Bonacci later dove twice during another rally to help Fort Calhoun earn a point. Even so, the Rockets eventually won by three-set sweep. The loss dropped the Pioneers to 2-2 on the season.

No. 9 Crete beats Blair
The 0-3 Blair Bears volleyball team traveled to Class B No. 9 Crete on Thursday and lost — 25-21, 25-22 and 25-17.
“While a loss always hurts, I'm so proud of how the girls played,” coach Becca Mellema said. “We have been working on mental toughness, and the girls played our game the entire time.”
The home team was victorious in the squads' first matchup, but the coach said her Bears were looking forward to the rematch Saturday in Wahoo during the Warriors' tournament.
“It's so much easier to work on technical corrections than mindset corrections,” Mellema explained.
Blair's results from Wahoo will appear in Friday's Washington County Enterprise.
