Logan View/Scribner-Snyder battled, but the Class C1 No. 8 Fort Calhoun football team improved to 5-1 Friday night with a 28-14 road victory.
Pioneers quarterback Adam Elofson capped scoring with a 20-yard, fourth-quarter touchdown pass to Chase Premer, but he contributed even more so on the ground. Three times the junior scored touchdowns with his legs, running into the end zone at 7-0, 14-7 and 21-7.
“It's always been a part of the offense, but I think he's starting to see how his reads work together,” FCHS coach Zach Byrd said of his QB. “And, I think we also have to give credit to our (running back) group as teams really have to focus in on them creating those opportunities for Adam. He did a great job of taking advantage of them tonight.”
Elofson faked a handoff on his first 18-yard touchdown run before keeping the ball with the option to pitch on the second 9-yarder. A long pass to Kade Foy down the sideline set up the quarterback's third, which came on a 6-yard rollout scramble.
The Raiders pulled within 21-14 of the Pioneers on Josh Egbers third-quarter touchdown run, but Premer's catch in the fourth ultimately put the home squad away. The win was Calhoun's third in a row after its only loss Sept. 13.
“Each week, we're coming together more and more,” Byrd said. “Everybody is understanding how their role is important, and guys are stepping up when roles need to change.”
Friday's 14-point win against Logan View was notable.
“We had to go through some adversity tonight and did a great job of responding,” FCHS' coach said.
Byrd's team next plays at Omaha Concordia on Friday. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
