FCHS sweeps home triangular

The newly-crowned Nebraska Capitol Conference Tournament champions took care of more business Tuesday night.
Days after claiming their conference title, the Class C No. 9 Fort Calhoun softball team beat both Central City and Highway 91 during a home triangular. The Pioneers (18-5 overall) topped the Bison first, 5-3, before earning a 13-1 run-rule victory against the Cyclones.
Holding onto a 1-0 lead, FCHS took control of its Central City victory with three runs during the fourth inning. Izzy Greenough tripled to right field with one out before Isabel Wray doubled to the fence to score her.
Anna Taylor reached base next for the Pioneers before her sister, Kaylee Taylor, hit a two-run single over the Bison shortstop's head for a 4-0 advantage.
Central City scored on an error during the top of the fifth inning, but Calhoun answered back with Allison Prunty's RBI double off of the fence during the bottom half.
Pioneers pitcher Tacey Belina held off the Bison from there as the time limit was reached. She struck out four batters during the six-inning game.
FCHS' victory against Highway 91 took just three frames, though. Coach Mandy Taylor's squad scored one first-inning run, eighth in the second and four in the fourth to beat the Cyclones by 12.
Prunty homered and had three RBIs, while both Dehlia Hallberg and Madi Larrick doubled and had two apiece. Anna Taylor plated two runs as well, while Kaylee Taylor, Belina — who double twice — and Greenough pushed across one each.
The Pioneers were scheduled to close out the regular season Thursday at Logan View/Scribner-Snyder, but will next host the Class C Subdistrict 6 Tournament on Monday. FCHS starts play at 2 p.m. against Gothenburg — the team that defeated it in the district finals a year ago — with the winner to face either Central City or Southern/Diller-Odell in the finals at 6.
