Strikeouts were prevalent this past weekend.
The first Nannen Physical Therapy Athletes of the Week of the new school year piled them up. Brooke Janning, Tessa Spivey and Anna Taylor are your honorees as we here at Enterprise Media Group get this weekly, Sunday feature rolling once again.

Brooke Janning, Blair softball: The Bears’ ace was good out of the gate. She struck out 18 Wayne batters during the season opener before going toe-to-toe with Class A No. 2 Papillion-La Vista for 11 innings Saturday. The left-handed pitcher surrendered just two runs to the Monarchs after more than 120 pitches. Oh and, by the way, Janning homered against Wayne, too.

Tessa Spivey, Arlington softball: Sound the alarm. We have a new school record. Spivey struck out 20 Ponca batters in the Eagles’ season opener, earning a complete-game shutout in less than the 90-minute tournament time limit in Wayne. Coach Janelle Lorsch said her pitcher was just an error away from throwing a perfect game.

Anna Taylor, Fort Calhoun softball: The senior homered first and earned a pitching win second Saturday. She cleared the fence during the season opener against North Bend Central before striking out eight batters and beating Bayard later on during the same day.

As I like to say, make sure you congratulate these Athletes of the Week when you see them this week. It’s always fun to start a new school year’s sports seasons and I look forward to bringing you many more athletes to celebrate every Sunday all school year long.

Thanks for reading.
