Vinny Bonacci shot a team-best 50 strokes as the Fort Calhoun golf team opened its season Thursday at Northridge Country Club in Tekamah.
Sporting new golf bags, the varsity Pioneers totaled 218 swings across nine holes to finish second to their triangular hosts from Tekamah-Herman. Coach Dustin Humphrey characterized it as an “OK day” as his team dealt with a stiff breeze.
Bonacci, however, had “a great day in the conditions,” the coach said. The senior's swings led the junior varsity lineup, which finished with 277 strokes. Leah Klabunde added 65, while Caden Newman and Aiden Garbers notched 74 apiece. Abbey Linemann carded 79 and Adrianna Hernandez had 81.
Playing partners Dylan Boldt and Jayden Miller, meanwhile, led the varsity squad with identical 54s. Owen Miller and Mason Bliss added 55 strokes apiece, while Beau Ruma had 71.
Tekamah's Bret Brennels led all golfers with a nine-hole 40, while the Tigers' Brody Rogers added 41 strokes. Kaden Frahm led Lyons-Decatur Northeast with 55 swings, too.
Coach Humphrey said he was hoping to see lower scores from the Pioneers in their next competition. Calhoun is scheduled to compete 4:30 p.m. today at Ashland Country Club.
